Technology - Nitric Oxide as a Therapeutic

Because of its high reactivity and short half-life, Nitric Oxide (NO) action and biological impact has been limited by the lack of suitable delivery systems. The Company's proprietary Hybrid Nanoparticles for the first time have enabled the preparation of stabile formulations of NO with controlled and sustained local delivery. Nitric Oxide is a simple diatomic molecule with an ever increasing array of important physiologic functions. The reactivity of NO is diverse and extensive. NO is lipophilic and readily crosses most physiologic barriers reaching target cells with relative ease. NO can diffuse along a concentration gradient, permitting it to rapidly move from cell to cell independent of receptors and channels. Because of its high reactivity and short half life, NO action and biological impact are determined primarily by rate of formation at, or delivery to, the local site. Ongoing research is revealing the therapeutic potential for NO in treating infection and in modulating vasoactivity, angiogenesis and wound healing.
